Privacy Policy

Trellis is built privacy-first: no ads, ever, we never sell your family's data, and a parent — not a child — controls the account. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the rights you have as a parent or guardian.

1. Who we are

Trellis Apps, LLC ("Trellis," "we," "us") operates the Trellis HQ and Trellis Academy applications (together, the "Service"). For privacy questions, contact us at hello@trellisapps.com.

This policy applies to the Trellis HQ and Trellis Academy apps and explains what information we collect, why, how it's used, and the choices and rights available to parents and guardians.

Scope note: the Service is currently offered to U.S. residents only.

2. Who can use Trellis

Trellis is a family app intended for use by a parent or legal guardian on behalf of their household, including children under 13. Because we knowingly collect information about children under 13, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) governs how we handle that information — see Section 6.

A child does not create their own account. A parent or guardian creates the family account, sets up each child's profile, and controls consent, payment, and account settings.

3. Information we collect

From the parent/guardian (account holder)

• Email address (for account access, login links, and service communications)
• A parent-set PIN (for in-app parental controls)
• Payment information — processed entirely by Stripe; Trellis never receives or stores your card number (see Section 5)
• State of residence (used only to map your child's learning content to your state's grade-level standards)
• Household setup information you provide when building your family's routine — such as household goals and values, the time you realistically have for things like homework help, meals, or errands, and schedule preferences (for example, dinner time or a lights-out time) — used only to generate and personalize your family's suggested daily rhythm
• Your own daily engagement with the routines you've set up (for example, a private "streak" of your own completed items) — shown only to you

About your child (entered by the parent, on the child's behalf)

• First name
• Age and/or grade level
• An optional avatar photo (you may use an emoji or illustrated avatar instead — a photo is never required)
• Optional learning accommodations you choose to share (for example: ADHD, autism, dyslexia/dyscalculia, sensory needs) — only if you choose to provide this, used solely to personalize lesson pacing and hints
• Optional interests, preferred learning style, and what motivates or excites your child — shared by you (or with your child, together) to personalize lessons and encouragement
• In-app learning activity: diagnostic results, session scores, which hints were used, and progress through lessons

We do not collect a child's full legal name, home address, phone number, or precise geolocation.

4. How we use this information

• To operate the Service: deliver age- and grade-appropriate lessons, track progress, and sync data across the parent's devices
• To personalize learning: route questions through our AI learning coach at an appropriate difficulty and pace, and use any accommodations you've shared to adjust hints and pacing
• To process payment for your subscription (via Stripe)
• To communicate with you about your account, billing, and material changes to the Service or this policy
• To maintain and improve the Service's reliability and safety

We do not use a child's information to serve targeted advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles of children.

5. Who we share information with

We do not sell children's personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share data only with the following categories of service providers, solely to operate the Service:

We require every provider above to handle data securely and only for the purpose we've engaged them for. We do not permit any of them to use Trellis user data for their own marketing or model-training purposes.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the safety of a child or the integrity of the Service.

6. Children's privacy (COPPA)

Trellis is designed so that a parent or guardian, not the child, controls the account. Before we collect any personal information about your child, we obtain verifiable parental consent, satisfied through the combination of:

• An explicit consent confirmation at signup, and
• Your completed payment transaction through Stripe, which confirms you are an adult account holder.

As a parent, you have the right to:

• Review all personal information we have collected about your child
• Request deletion of your child's personal information and/or account at any time
• Refuse to allow further collection of your child's information — without losing access you've already paid for during the current billing period
• Withdraw consent at any time, which will stop further collection

To exercise any of these rights, contact hello@trellisapps.com or use the in-app parent controls (Settings → Manage Child Data). We collect only the information needed to provide the Service, and a child's participation is never conditioned on providing more information than necessary.

7. Accommodations and other sensitive information

If you choose to share a learning accommodation (e.g., ADHD, autism, dyslexia/dyscalculia, sensory needs), we treat this as sensitive information. It is:

• Optional — never required to use the Service
• Collected only with your affirmative opt-in, separate from the general consent step
• Used only to personalize your child's lesson pacing and hints — never shared for advertising, never sold
• Deletable at any time through the same parental controls described in Section 6

8. Data retention

We retain your family's information only as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. If you delete your account or request deletion of your child's data, we will delete it within 30 days, except where we are required to retain limited records for legal, billing, or fraud-prevention purposes.

9. Data security

We use industry-standard safeguards to protect your family's information, including encryption in transit and at rest, and a single server-side AI integration key (no per-user API keys are ever exposed to the app or browser). No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, but we are committed to protecting your data using commercially reasonable means.

10. Your choices and rights (all users)

Depending on your state of residence, you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, or opt out of certain processing of personal information (for example, under the California Consumer Privacy Act / CPRA). We extend the same core rights — access, deletion, and opt-out of any sale or sharing — to all U.S. users, regardless of state. We do not sell personal information.

11. International users

Trellis is currently offered to U.S. residents only. If this changes, we will update this policy to address applicable international requirements (such as GDPR) before opening the Service to users outside the U.S.

12. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy — especially changes affecting what data we collect about children or how we use it — we will notify parents by email and require renewed consent where required by law before the change takes effect.
